Device gateways and long sessions: planning for reconnect bursts
Device counts, heartbeats and authentication shape both steady-state load and recovery bursts.

Separate device protocols from management pages
A device platform often includes a web console and MQTT or custom connections. Confirm transport, TLS and port support separately. SCDN for the console does not automatically protect device channels.
Heartbeats and idle handling affect availability
Validate forwarding idle behavior, device sleep cycles and backend sessions together. Avoid disconnecting devices during expected low-power periods, and handle protocol-specific session recovery in the application.
Avoid synchronized reconnects
After an outage, many devices may reauthenticate and resend messages together. Plan backoff, staggering and queue handling around recovery peaks. Mitigation does not replace device identity or topic authorization.
Use test devices for failure validation
Use controlled devices to test outages, certificate changes, maintenance and recovery, checking duplicates and state consistency. Expand to production only through the established change process with monitoring and rollback.
